Hackers have always looked for innovative ways to gain access into target systems. Be it calling up a help-desk saying they’ve lost their password to having people unknowingly install software on their computers, malicious individuals will stop at nothing if you are in their cross-hairs. The rise of Ransomware is very concerning.
Ransomware is software installed on your computer systems that prevent you from using your computer as fully intended. The loss of functionality may simply be not allowing you to use your web browser, the software may encrypt your files so you no longer have access to them, or the Ransomware may completely lock-up your system preventing any and all use. In order to gain access to your system, the software will ask you to perform a task – usually in the form of paying a “ransom” to the hacker.
In March of 2016 alone, there were 56,000 Ransomware attacks according to leading Anti-Virus maker Symantec, and in the last 12 months, half of ALL organizations have been hit with some form of Ransomware. Even more stunning is $209 Million was paid to hackers due to Ransomware attacks in Q1 of 2016.
Knowing that hackers are relentless in their pursuit of targets, and the trends showing the proliferation of such attacks, what are you doing to protect your organization? Chances are the answer is “Not Enough.”
